Hi everybody…in my last post, I mentioned that I’d be following up with tales of a “launch long past”. I’m still working on that post, but it’s currently mammoth in length and I need to trim it down to something workable.
In the meantime, I thought I’d ask for some contributions from the audience. You see, I’m currently hard at work on the as-yet-untitled sequel to Latasha and the Little Red Tornado. If you’ve read the first book (or even the jacket copy), you know that the singer Ella Fitzgerald figures into the story in a couple important ways. Music is even more crucial to the Latasha sequel.
So, as I work to bring home the second book, I’m putting together a mixtape of terrific female singers of the past and present. It’s both for me to listen to as I write, and for Latasha herself; the mix I’m making will be given to her as a gift in the story. I already have a number of singers in mind — Ella, Aretha, Nina Simone, Stevie Nicks, Janis Joplin, to give you an idea — but I want more.
Here’s where you, the reader, come in. What I want you to do is follow me on Facebook or on Twitter, and then send me a note — on my wall, as a tweet, or on this blog — with your favorite lady singer’s name, and what draws you to her. Your singer can be living or dead, a solo artist or part of a band, it doesn’t matter. It can even be one of the singers I’ve already mentioned. Just tell me who you like and why, in the most concise way you can express it. I’m talking no longer than a tweet. For example, were Latasha to enter this contest, she would write:
“@michaelascotto Ella Fitzgerald: Joyful, funny, pure voice. Unafraid of mistakes. I love Mack the Knife!”
Remember, this contest is only open to my Facebook fans and Twitter followers, so if you want to participate, make sure you are one of those! I’ll be taking submissions starting now through Tuesday, December 13th at 4pm EST. At that point, all entrants will be numbered in the order they were received, and two winners will be drawn at random. The winners will each receive a signed Latasha and the Little Red Tornado bookmark —
— as well as a personalized copy of the mix CD that will appear in the sequel! (I may even sing you a thank-you song…)
Here’s to lots of great suggestions…Go!
