My very first virtual visit

Yesterday, I had the great fortune to do a virtual visit with a school called Manatee Academy down in Port St. Lucie, FL. I’ve done a number of in-person visits with schools, but this over-the-web thing was a first for me. Fortunately, the technology worked without so much as a hiccup, and the kids came prepared with plenty of great questions about writing in general, my work, and my inspirations.

There was only one thing that didn’t go exactly as planned. Guessing that there might be a question or two about what inspired me to write Latasha and the Little Red Tornado, I had planned on having my dog, Lucy — who inspired Ella physically and in temperament — drop by the visit. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out that way. Having had one too many treats, my pup decided that for once, she didn’t want to run around wreaking adorable havoc. Instead, she did this:
